Customize it !

Take something you own and customize it. It's usually quite enjoyable and in the end it will usually work better than the original.

Note: Don't try this with anything complex or expensive, unless you have a degree in engineering or can afford to buy another.

Hey, dag's back! Sorry, I stopped checking your blog a while ago - assuming you'd wandered off (you had). Ok, I'm all caught up now spring, booze, bacon.

Give us examples of what you've customized or what you'd like to customize. I have a degree in engineering and I'm not afraid to use it.

Things I've customized: Gagarge door opener, home security system, Brutus automatic food dispenser, dining room table, bird cage, gas grill, cars (of course), laser/light aiming device...

Things I'm looking to customize: Lawn mower, patio furniture, staircase railing, attic door.

I'm not getting what you mean by customize. Are you pumping up the power of your garage door opener by modifying the circuitry and connecting the power supply to your car's electrical system, then installing it under the dash, with only a button protruding through? Or am I thinking along the wrong lines, and you've drawn on dog bones using gray puffy paint?

My customizations usually have medium complexity, I modified my garage door to activate via an IR laser. All I have to do is aim IR at the well hidden sensor and it will open my door from very long distances. I customized Brutus' auto feeder by connecting multiple food reservoirs and allowing him to pick the type of food he wants (beef/chicken/lamb/rice). My dining room table mod was fun – I stripped, repainted, made a leaf and added about 4 inches to the legs. My home security system customization is top secret ;)
