Sight Seeing

This post is by request. When it comes to aiming devices you have a few options. First you musts choose your usage. Are you purely defensive? Are you strictly a competitive gamer? Are you a long distance precision freak?

In case you have not a clue as to what I’m referring to, I’m talking about guns, firearms, peashooters, scatterblasters etc.. you know the evil little things that kill people. This is not meant to start a progun/gun control argument, so save your breath for someone who wants to hear it. This is all about what sighting system you should get for your gun.

For arguments sake, we’ll pretend you have a gun and use it for a particular purpose on a regular basis. There are many uses. You may use it for duty, sport, fun, defense or just playtime. If you don’t have one, try one. If you are adamantly opposed to guns and think nobody should own them, go change the law.

There are many types of sighting systems, so we’ll just stick to the three most common - iron sights, dot sights and scopes. The first and most basic are plain old iron sights. Usually a gun comes with iron sights and it’s what most people use. They don’t protrude too much from the basic outline of the firearm, so they work nicely in holsters. Generally, they consist of a rear sight that is a horizontal bar with a notch out of the middle and a front sight that is just a post. To aim, align the front post it appears to sit in the middle of the notch of the rear sight and put the aimpoint of the target of which you are shooting at ever so slightly above the horizontal bar you just formed with the sights. The drawbacks include longer sight acquisition (compared to dot sights) and some are not adjustable for wind and elevation compensation. They are great for closer ranges and don’t have much complexity. First time shooters should use these for learning the basics.

The second type of sight is the dot sight, also called the electronic sight, holographic sight, red dot sight and others. It is a separate unit that mounts to the firearm. You aim it by looking through a tube or lens. Within the lens is a reticule of some shape, most often a dot, but sometimes a circle or triangle as well as other variants. Sighting is simple, position the gun so the dot is on whatever target you want to hit and pull the trigger. Target acquisition is very quick. Drawbacks include bulkiness weight and they are usually not cheap. They are great for sporting games and combat where quick target acquisition is crucial.

The third type of sights is a scope. Scopes are generally used when shooting longer distances or extreme precision and magnification is needed. They are a separate unit and mount to the firearm. Some have adjustable magnifications and an adjustable objective lens, which is used to minimize the parallax seen through the scope. Disadvantages are bulkiness, weight, slower target acquisition and expense, but if you need to shoot long distances, there’s not too many ways around them.

I’ve left out a few, but these are the one most often used. I hope this helped, and happy shooting.

I've seen some good ones lately, here are a few...

(Insert your name), what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertion of better men than himself."

Customize it !

Take something you own and customize it. It's usually quite enjoyable and in the end it will usually work better than the original.

Note: Don't try this with anything complex or expensive, unless you have a degree in engineering or can afford to buy another.

Spring is here. Or is it. I want it to be. It's that time of year where I'm getting sick of the rain/snow mix and want to see some thing sprouting out of the ground. If mother Nature comes a knockin' at your door would you please tell her that Spring starts now.

T-Shirts Survive!

In case you all were hung in great suspended animation wondering if my T-shirts survive unstainedd, wait no longer. They made it through the laundery just fine. my maid said my washer and dryer (the twin Death Stars) are the best and it handled them no sweat. Now my day is free of worries.

Boozey Stench

So I unpacked my suitcase last night. It smelled like someone poured a rank bottle of cheap scotch all over everything. The culprit: A bottle of my hair spray gell stuff. Either I did not secure the top or the delta in pressure was too much and allowed most of it to leak out.

Bums me out. Clothes are usually just something to cover my bod in most cases and not meant to make statements, but this alcohol based spray gel decided to go directly for my favorite t-shirts. Everyone has got them, you know, the ones you get from your favorite vacation and the kind some buddy in a far away place mailed you that you will probably never be able to replace. Hopefuly they will survive the wash and dry with minimal stainage. I'm going to leave that to the experts though, considering I have no idea how to work my washer and dryer (the twin death stars) anyway.

Home Again

Brutus is happy to see my return. He didn't eat much while I was gone so I am told.

Phoenix was greener than I have ever seen it. More like Iowa than Arizona. The normal mountianous rocks were all covered with green grass and flowers. Nothing short of amazing. Spent more time to the East of Phoenix than planned, hiking up in the Superstition Mtns. I did make it up to Prescott and Sedona for a couple of days, but the scenery seemed more incredible down in the valley of the sun.

I've started a little research project into finding the location of the Lost Dutchman's gold mine. It's probably just a long standing hoax to keep the tourists interested in the Superstition Mountains, but if it's not, there's gold in them thar hills and dag is going to find it.
